A three-day mosquito control and public awareness campaign has been launched in Savar, Dhaka, to help prevent the spread of dengue.
The campaign, titled “Drive Away Mosquitoes, Save the Community,” was inaugurated on Thursday (October 8) in Bongaon Union of Savar.
The initiative was organised by Abdullah Abul Khayer, organising secretary of Savar Thana BNP and a candidate for chairman of Bongaon Union, as a personal public welfare initiative.
On the opening day, awareness leaflets on dengue prevention were distributed among local residents in different areas of Bongaon Union. At the same time, mosquito-killing chemicals were sprayed using fogging machines on roads, drains and bushes in various parts of the union to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes.
Speaking at the inauguration, Abdullah Abul Khayer said the dengue situation across the country has become a matter of concern. He said the initiative was taken voluntarily to help protect residents of Bongaon Union from the disease.
He stressed that spraying pesticides alone would not be enough to control mosquitoes and called for greater public awareness. He urged residents to keep their surroundings clean and ensure that stagnant water does not accumulate around their homes.
He further said that standing beside people in times of need is their main objective. The mosquito control and awareness campaign will continue for three days across every ward and neighbourhood of the union, he said, adding that they would continue working with local residents until dengue is brought under control.
Local dignitaries, leaders and activists of BNP-affiliated organisations, and residents from different sections of the community attended the inauguration.
Local residents welcomed the initiative aimed at preventing dengue and controlling the mosquito population in the area.
