Bangladesh have advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s cricket event at the Asian Games after their quarter-final against China was abandoned without a single ball being bowled.
The match was scheduled to be played at Korogi Sports Park in Japan on Thursday. However, the playing conditions were deemed unsuitable, forcing the match to be called off.
As Bangladesh were ranked higher than China in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings, the Tigresses secured a place in the semi-finals without taking the field.
Bangladesh are currently ranked 10th in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings, while China are ranked 36th. The higher-ranked team was therefore awarded the semi-final spot after the washout.
In the fourth quarter-final, hosts Japan will face India. The winner of that match will meet Bangladesh in the semi-final, raising the possibility of another Bangladesh-India clash on the Asian stage.
The two semi-finals will determine the finalists for the gold-medal match on September 22. The two losing semi-finalists will compete for the bronze medal.
Bangladesh’s women have previously won silver medals at the 2010 and 2014 Asian Games. They later secured a bronze medal at the 2022 edition.
