After being whitewashed, Pakistan cricket has now found itself facing another major setback. The Pakistan team has been hit with a double punishment for maintaining a slow over rate during the third Test against England at Edgbaston. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the matter.

Pakistan have been docked 11 points from the World Test Championship (WTC). As a result, the team’s hopes of reaching the WTC final have effectively come to an end. In addition, the players have been fined 50 percent of their match fees.

According to ICC regulations, on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Allahudien Paleker, and fourth umpire Russell Warren brought the charge. Match referee Ranjan Madugalle subsequently imposed the sanctions.

In a statement, the ICC said that under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players and support staff are fined five percent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl within the allotted time, subject to a maximum penalty of 50 percent of the match fee.

The ICC also stated that under Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, teams are penalized one WTC point for every over they fall short of the required over rate.

As Pakistan were found to be 11 overs short, a total of 11 WTC points were deducted from their tally.

Pakistan had already suffered a heavy setback in the series after losing all three Tests against England and being whitewashed. Following the 11-point deduction, Pakistan have now dropped to the bottom of the WTC standings.

In 11 Tests, Pakistan have managed just two victories, with their win percentage standing at only 4.63 percent.

In the race to reach the 2027 World Test Championship final, Australia and South Africa are currently among the leading contenders. Meanwhile, Bangladesh are in third place.
